Where It All Began
My name is Pooja Shah, and my journey into the world of information studies has been anything but conventional. From an early age, I was drawn to problem-solving—whether it was troubleshooting gadgets at home, analyzing patterns in school projects, or later, diving into data to uncover hidden insights. My curiosity led me to pursue a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics, but it was during my time in the corporate world that I truly discovered my passion for data analytics and business intelligence.
A Campus Like No Other
The first time I stepped onto the Syracuse University campus, I was captivated. The golden autumn leaves danced with the wind, painting the pathways in hues of amber and crimson. The grandeur of the Hall of Languages, standing tall against the sky, felt like a gateway to endless opportunities. I remember the feeling of awe as I walked past the Carrier Dome, the heartbeat of the university, and made my way to Hinds Hall, where my iSchool journey would officially begin. There was an undeniable energy in the air—a mix of ambition, curiosity, and a welcoming embrace that made me feel at home. The campus, with its stunning blend of history and innovation, was the perfect place to embark on my next adventure.
Beyond academics, Syracuse has provided countless opportunities for exploration and adventure. Whether it was hiking through breathtaking state parks, visiting museums, attending hackathons, or enjoying thrilling experiences like horse riding, skiing, snow tubing, and even swimming classes, every moment here has contributed to an unforgettable journey.
Why I Chose the iSchool
Choosing the iSchool was one of the most pivotal decisions of my career. I wanted a program that seamlessly blended technical expertise with business acumen, and the iSchool’s interdisciplinary approach was the perfect match. With courses in data visualization, enterprise risk management, and predictive analytics, I saw an opportunity to refine my skills and grow as a leader in the field of data and technology.
Beyond academics, the iSchool’s welcoming community played a huge role in my decision. As an international student, adjusting to a new country and academic environment was daunting, but the faculty, peers, and alumni network at the iSchool made the transition seamless. The iSchool isn’t just an institution—it’s a family that fosters collaboration, mentorship, and innovation.
Becoming a Graduate Admissions Ambassador
One of the highlights of my time at the iSchool has been serving as a Graduate Admissions Ambassador. This role has allowed me to connect with prospective students, share my journey, and guide them through the graduate school application process. I vividly remember being in their shoes—navigating uncertainties, making tough decisions, and seeking guidance. Now, being on the other side, I feel incredibly fulfilled knowing that I can help others take their first steps towards an enriching academic and professional experience.
Additionally, I had the privilege of serving as a Welcome Ambassador at the International Student Center, where I helped new international students settle into life at Syracuse. Assisting students from diverse backgrounds and ensuring they felt supported in their transition was an incredibly rewarding experience.
Professional and Academic Growth
My time at the iSchool has been packed with hands-on projects and research that have expanded my technical and analytical skills. Working as a Research Assistant under Professor Joshua Darr, I focused on web scraping and data collection, refining my expertise in handling large datasets and extracting meaningful insights. Additionally, my coursework in enterprise risk management has equipped me with the knowledge to assess and mitigate risks in business environments, a skill that is increasingly valuable in today’s data-driven world.
Beyond coursework, I had the opportunity to secure a summer internship, where I applied my knowledge in a real-world business environment. This experience allowed me to bridge the gap between academia and industry, solidifying my ability to translate complex data into actionable strategies.
Looking Ahead
As I approach graduation, I am eager to channel my experiences and skills into impactful roles in data analytics, business intelligence and project management. My goal is to drive meaningful change through data-driven solutions, whether in consulting, technology, or financial services. Additionally, I hope to continue mentoring and inspiring future students, just as I was supported throughout my journey.
