Felice Bloom fondly remembers visiting her older sister at Syracuse University. Every time she came to campus, Bloom fell more in love with the school and everything it had to offer. When it came time for her to choose a college, Syracuse was the obvious choice.
As a technology lover, she knew the university’s School of Information Studies would be the perfect fit for her talents. Now a junior, she is studying to earn a bachelor’s degree in Innovation, Society, and Technology with a concentration in Data Analytics.
“Choosing Syracuse and being in the iSchool has helped me prepare for my future in so many ways,” Bloom said. “It has given me important skills in collaboration and creativity. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that have challenged me to think critically and grow alongside my peers. The emphasis on teamwork has taught me the value of different viewpoints and effective communication, which are essential in today’s collaboration settings.”
Since coming to the iSchool, Bloom has made it her mission to take on leadership roles with organizations that help students feel more connected and included. Last year, she had the opportunity to co-run Women in Technology, a group who works to create a supportive community where women can network and enhance their skills.
This year, she is serving as president of the BeIT iSchool Undergraduate Club. The BeIT club’s mission is to give students social, academic, and community service opportunities to create community, camaraderie, and enthusiasm for the iSchool. In her new role, Bloom will help organize events, such as study groups, panels, workshops and other out of class learning experiences.
“I will be working closely with the rest of the executive board to create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome, no matter their background or major,” Bloom said. “I am excited to create a variety of events this year targeted at fostering relationships and meaningful connections among iSchool students. From workshops and networking events to social gatherings, my goal is to provide opportunities for everyone to interact, share ideas, and grow together.
Immersing herself in the iSchool community is one way that Bloom stays connected to her peers and professors. Her best advice for fellow students is to be involved on campus and have more conversations with people.
“This is not only a great way to build skills but also to expand your network and connect with like-minded peers,” she said. “Interacting with individuals with diverse experiences and points of view will enhance your education and prepare you for the teamwork-oriented atmosphere of the technology field.”
Bloom’s eventual goal is to use the leadership skills she’s learned at the iSchool to thrive in a career in technology operations, particularly in areas that encourage inclusion and accessibility.
“I really think that by fostering a strong, interconnected community, we can all thrive and inspire one another on our journeys,” she said.
