The Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) proudly recognizes Ping Zhang and Jian Qin on being awarded emerita status upon their retirement—an honor that reflects their extraordinary contributions to research, teaching, and the advancement of the information field.

Over decades of service, Zhang and Qin have played a central role in shaping the intellectual foundation of the iSchool. Through their scholarship, mentorship, and leadership, they have influenced generations of students and contributed to the school’s growth and global reputation. Their work has helped define key areas of information studies while fostering a culture of inquiry, collaboration, and innovation.

Ping Zhang: A Lasting Impact in Human-Centered Computing

Since joining the iSchool in 1995, Ping Zhang has built a remarkable scholarly legacy in human-computer interaction, affective computing, and the intellectual development of information-related fields. Her research has advanced understanding of how individuals engage with technology, examining cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions across individuals, organizations, and societies. Her 200+ academic publications have received 16,500+ citations globally from multiple disciplines.

Zhang’s impact extends beyond her research contributions. She co-wrote the first textbook on Human-Computer Interaction for non-computer science students. She has graduated seven doctoral students, three of whom received the Syracuse University Doctoral Prize and one received the 2014 ALISW Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Award, reflecting her deep commitment to mentorship and academic excellence. Zhang co-founded the AIS (Association for Information Systems) Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction (SIGHCI) and the academic journal AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, helping to establish key platforms for scholarship in the field. Her service as the inaugural historian of AIS and the iSchools Organization further underscores her role in preserving and shaping the discipline’s intellectual legacy. Over her career, she has received 24 awards for research, teaching, and services.

Jian Qin: Advancing Metadata and Knowledge Systems

Jian Qin, who joined the iSchool in 1999, has been a defining voice in knowledge organization, metadata, and scientific data management. Her work has played a critical role in shaping how information is structured, connected, and utilized in an increasingly data-driven and AI-enabled world.

Her foundational textbook, Metadata—now in its third edition—has become a widely used resource for students and professionals globally. Through her research, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Qin has contributed significantly to advancing understanding of data infrastructure and knowledge systems.

Qin’s contributions to graduate education have been especially impactful. She received the 2024 Syracuse University Excellence in Graduate Education Award, recognizing her dedication to mentoring students as scholars, educators, and professionals. Her earlier recognition with the 2020 Frederick G. Kilgour Award further highlights her influence on research in library and information technology. Across her career, she has mentored generations of students and scholars, extending her impact far beyond the classroom.

A Shared Legacy of Mentorship, Leadership, and Impact

Beyond their individual achievements, both Zhang and Qin have made enduring contributions to the iSchool through their teaching, mentorship, research, and service. They have helped shape not only their respective fields but also the experiences and career paths of countless students.

Their influence is reflected in the communities they have built, the scholarship they have advanced, and the culture of intellectual curiosity they have fostered within the iSchool. Together, they represent a legacy defined by innovation, dedication, and a commitment to advancing the field of information studies.

As they transition into emerita roles, both remain connected to the iSchool community, continuing to share their knowledge and inspire future generations.

The iSchool celebrates their remarkable careers and the lasting impact they leave behind.
