Technology Recommendations

iSchool students must have a laptop with Windows 10 or MacOS. Chromebooks or tablets are not adequate for the technical demands of your coursework.

Many of your classes will require you to use Microsoft Windows applications. Mac users can work with these applications in our Hinds Hall computer labs, or via virtualization. A Windows laptop is recommended.

  • 16GB RAM
  • Intel i5/i7 processor
  • HDMI adapter
  • 256GB of storage reserved for iSchool courses

Your First Semester Schedule

You will receive emails to your Syracuse University email account prompting you to log into MySlice and complete an online form to choose the courses you are interested in taking your first semester. Please be sure to check your new SU email early and often for updates! Fall schedules will be released in MySlice in late summer.

You will be enrolled in:

  • IST 101
  • IST 195
  • SEM 100
  • WRT 105
  • Quantitative skills course

If you are bringing in any type of transfer credit (AP/IB and/or course(s) taken at another institution), there is an option to indicate this within MySlice and your schedule will be made accordingly.

Make sure to take your math placement exam to be placed into the appropriate course.

The rest of your credits will be liberal arts courses offered through the Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences. You will use the online form to select courses that sound interesting to you. An advisor will use the information you provide in the online form to create your fall schedule and enroll you in courses. We do our best to grant your first preference in classes.

First year students take approximately 16-17 credits in their first semester (dual degree students may be enrolled in up to 19 credits).

If after you receive your schedule you want to make edits, we have dedicated meeting times for you to make adjustments to your first semester schedule during Welcome Week. There is no need to set-up an individual appointment before Welcome Week. Scheduling adjustment times will be printed in the Welcome Week program.

Placement Exams

All new Syracuse University students are expected to take all applicable placement examinations before registering for classes. Mathematics and Foreign Language placement exams are available online. Non-native English speakers must take the English Language Assessment Exam once you arrive on campus.
