Courses & Curriculum

The B.S. in Innovation, Society, & Technology is 120 credits. The curriculum allows students to choose courses in each of the three areas of study for the major – innovation, technology, and society. This is then blended with a liberal arts core to create a well-rounded education.

Primary Core: 12-13 credits

IST 101 | 1 CREDIT
Transition to life at the iSchool and Syracuse University, and become more familiar with the information field. Explore the range of possibilities that our undergraduate degree is designed to provide.

IST 195 | 3 CREDITS
State-of-the-art technologies in the field. Computer architectures, telecommunication networks, software design and application. Issues in information management and technology use.

IST 344 | 3 CREDITS
Information synthesis and the presentation of information. Organizing information for presentation, text, and graphics. Presentation skills, training and teaching methods.

IST 477 | 3 CREDITS
Required capstone for BSc in Innovation, Society & Technology (IST).  Students investigate a topic of interest to them related to technological innovation and society.  This research focused capstone course builds on prior coursework.

IST 256 | 3 CREDITS
Computational literacy and learning to code are critical skills of the 21st century. Students are introduced to Python programming language with emphasis on practical applications relevant to everyday lives and common within the information field.

Approaches for building pipelines in data analytics using the Python programming language; data cleaning, extraction, wrangling, API’s, web scraping. Building data products. Programming experience required.

Concentrations and Electives: 15 credits

Students must complete five additional iSchool courses to fulfill their IS&T elective requirement. Students are required to complete one iSchool concentration which typically consists of three courses.  The remaining two courses may be any IST 100-599 level courses or IDS courses.

Understand how hackers and computer viruses work to improve cybersecurity and protect information.

Develop managerial and technical skills to oversee informational systems and create business policies.

Study the development of network technologies, such as cloud services, and their effect on users.

Create and maintain web resources and sites to make sense for users and organizations.

Enhance your knowledge of electronic commerce, technologies, and layout strategy for retail corporations.

Develop the creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial skills needed to run a business.

University Wide Requirements

The IDEA course requirement provides undergraduate students the opportunity to explore concepts in social justice, broadly defined. The IDEA acronym encapsulates the core concepts of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility.

Computational literacy and learning to code are critical skills of the 21st century. Students are introduced to Python programming language with emphasis on practical applications relevant to everyday lives and common within the information field.

Students are required to take 12 credits in communications skills, including IST 344.

All ADA majors are required to attain minimum competence in mathematics.

Students are required to take three courses in each of the three divisions of the Arts and Sciences-Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Humanities.

Students need 120 credits to graduate from Syracuse University.  If after meeting all program and University requirements, the student is still lacking to meet the 120 credits needed for graduation, students can take any undergraduate Syracuse University course to reach the graduation credits total.

Students will be required to complete one international experience to graduate with their iSchool undergraduate degree.
